Why is it that many in the United States are fixated on speaking only one language? You might not feel that way, but many do feel it should be an English-only country, and it’s a topic Eva Longoria focused on as she promoted the 15th annual ALMA Awards this week.

Longoria will host the American Latino Media Arts Awards (ALMA for short) for Hispanic History Month on Friday night–and took up the issue with MSNBC host Jose Diaz-Balart Thursday morning during his show. She told Diaz-Balart the question of bilingualism in Latinos boils down to celebrating your identity.

“We’re the only country in the world that promotes monolingualism,” Longoria told Diaz-Balart.

Diaz-Balart, a Cuban-American TV host, is an example of the bilingual and bicultural society that continues to grow in the United States, as he hosts his daily MSNBC show in English and hosts sister network Telemundo’s national newscast at 6:30 p.m. in Spanish.

NBC has put in development an anthology series from Chicago Fire co-executive producer Andrea Newman, Eva Longoria’s UnbelieEVAble Entertainment and Universal TV. The project is described as a supernatural thriller in a realistic tone. Inspired by the rich world of Hispanic folklore and myth, each season will explore a different legend and be set in the present-day Southwest.

The first season is based on the ancient Hispanic tale of La Llorona, the “weeping woman,” and follows a troubled Detective investigating a young mother accused of trying to drown her child in a small town hiding a supernatural secret. In the legend, a woman drowns her children for a man and is destined to search for them for eternity, sometimes abducting wandering children who resemble her own. The tale is familiar to NBC viewers as it was retold in an episode from the second season of the network’s popular supernatural drama Grimm (photo above). La Llorona also was the first villain on the CW’s long-running drama Supernatural.

Newman will write the script and will executive produce with Longoria, who is of Mexican descent and holds a Master’s degree in Chicano studies, as well as UnbeliEVAble’s Ben Spector. The project stems from Universal TV’s overall deal with Newman and first-look pact with UnbeliEVAble.

Newman, repped by ICM Partners and Jeff Frankel, has worked on such series as The Secret Circle, Human Target, Private Practice, Cold Case, 24 and Felicity. This is the fifth sale for UnbeliEVAble this development season. Longoria and UnbelEVAble are with CAA and Brillstein.

LOS ANGELES – The consul general of Israel in Los Angeles believes that Christianity is experiencing a rapidly growing renaissance in Israel. With that, he emphasized the biblical mandate that evangelical Christians and Jews have – to be in a favorable relationship with one another.

“We really are a community of believers and we are both mandated with relationship with one another, with relationships to our great religions, and the Promised Land, [and] the Holy Land,” Consul General David Siegel recently told The Christian Post. “It’s mandated in the Old Testament, it’s mandated even stronger in the New Testament. So we are biblically mandated to this relationship.”

Pointing to the fact that both faiths have shared foundational values, Siegel noted that in many cases these values are “identical.”

“We live in a world that we all understand is a world that needs to be repaired.”

Siegal echoed the statements he made last November at the “Fiesta Shalom at Sea” event held last November to celebrate the strong and expanding relationship between the Hispanic and Jewish communities in Los Angeles and other parts of the U.S. Present at the Marina Del Rey Harbor event were Eva Longoria and Edward James Olmos, who both spoke about the importance of visiting and getting to know both Israel and Mexico. Los Angeles has a large population of people connected to either country or both.

“Devious Maids” is set to premiere on Lifetime on Sunday night, but the show’s producer Eva Longoria is already having to defend the show over mounting criticism with the show’s depiction of Latina women.

“There probably wasn’t a Latina in the country who didn’t initially roll her eyes of ‘Oh great, here we go again. Another Latina character that’s a maid,”‘ Damarys Ocana, executive editor of Latina magazine, told the Huffington Post.

The new Lifetime show is being criticized for portraying Hispanics in demeaning and stereotypical roles while also being accused of being “degrading” towards Latina women.

Longoria, however, has defended the show, which she produced with “Desperate Housewives” creator Marc Cherry.

“When we get any sort of backlash, sort of ‘they are playing the stereotypical maids; my immediate response is that ‘so you’re telling me those stories aren’t worth telling?'” the 38-year-old actress said in an online video promoting the show.
